Security and Exchange Commission (SEC) is proposing a rule which would create a standard of conduct for the broker-dealers. This rule, called Regulation Best Interest, aims at addressing the concerns over conflicts of interests for broker-dealers who provide investment advice to retail customers. Broker-dealers play a critical role in assisting Americans plan and organize their financial lives by saving and investing wisely to have financial independence in the long run. The broker-dealers advise how Americans can invest their savings wisely and get reasonable returns on the investments (Regulation Best Interest, 2018). There exists a principle-agent relationship between broker-dealers and retail customers. It is expected that the broker-dealers should work for the interests of their clients by acting in good faith. However, in most cases, they are tempted to perform for their interests rather than those of their clients. Yes, I agree with the proposal by SEC to establish Regulation Best Interest to deal with conflict of interests for broker-dealers who offer investment advice to retail customers. This rule is formulated in response to market failure resulting from externalities.
Prejudices against people of certain races or geographical origin undermine the purpose of established procedures for security checks. Subjecting individuals to such kinds of treatment results in feelings of discontent as a certain group of individuals unfairly targeted. Security checks at airports fail to uphold the equal treatment requirement as evidenced by the tighter searches directed towards travelers from less privileged countries. Pico Iyer in ‘The Terminal Check” however observes that the current state of global security has forced a shift from the privileges enjoyed by travelers from rich countries at airports. This was not always the case considering the inconveniences that people from certain races had to go through not just at airports but also in their daily activities. Often they are treated with suspicion and subjected to undignified checks. The events of 9/11, however, changed the perspectives of authorities towards security risks. Security checks at airports are now almost equal since Americans just like other travelers have to go through the same inconveniences of long and tedious checks.
Ethics and Public Service The most important value in public service is ethical behavior. Ethics refers to the moral principles that govern an individual’s conduct and performance of activities. Public servants have to subscribe to the highest level of morality to earn and maintain the trust and confidence of society. As a result, various government agencies have formulated codes of ethics to guide and regulate the behavior of their employees. For instance, the department of homeland security (DHS) has incorporated a Memorandum on Ethical Behavior, which encourages workers to protect and conserve public resources. In addition, the directive requires employees to act with impartiality and avoid cases where private interests conflict with official functions. Further, the regulation challenges DHS members of staff to report waste, abuse, and fraud whenever it is detected within the department. Evidently, this government agency has taken proactive measures to integrate ethical behavior within its structures and culture.
Mediation and Moderation (what are they? How is mediation different from moderation? How were they tested in the paper?) Mediation and moderation are evaluative tools used in critiquing a theory. Variable that affect the strength between other testing points are defined as moderators. Contrarily, mediators help in strengthening this link. These items were tested using SPSS software with the authors applying different responses to identify patterns. Find the questions used in the survey. Explain the definitions of each one of the variables used in the study.
Legislative influence, whose intention is to sway government decisions, extensively impacts the trade policies of nations with extreme interests. Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and interest groups exhibit some differences that come with considerable advantages as well as limitations. Lobbying can be categorized into two whereby outside lobbying influences decision-making and culminates in positive administration relations, while outside lobbying uses platforms such as the public and the media to manipulate verdicts. The United States of America has, in the recent past, experienced lobby influence in most of its critical decisions made. As a result, its relationship with countries such as China has been affected, necessitating the adoption of measures such as tariffs to address rising trade interests.
Discussion 1 Ardmore Prison is facing several ethical concerns. There is a poor relationship between the correctional officers and prisoners, which compromises the anticipated behavioral change. It is a moral expectation for correctional officers to help the inmates to reform accordingly. Duffy, however, enforces strict measures that strain the relationship between the officers and inmates. It is at least expected that the convicts will live in isolation as Duff requires; instead, the officers should develop functional interactions to enable the incarcerated individuals to appreciate the value of character modification.
