Impacts of the COVID-19 Crisis Essay
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the world is now experiencing a period of uncertainty. Every country’s administration across the globe has urged its citizens to focus more on personal health and safety. It is during these moments that an individual’s self-discipline matters most because everyone has a significant role to play in the fight against this pandemic. Evidently, the COVID-19 crisis has impacted my pathway to optometry school through my academic, professional, and personal life. Becoming an optometrist requires hard work, diligence, and dedication. In this case, one must spend four years of undergraduate studies effectively to grasp all the concepts of the field. School time can undoubtedly be fun despite being a vital season of acquiring skills. However, for the optometry discipline, missing school for an extended period will impact my problem-solving skills. The homeschooling environment has not provided some inspirational moments that I received when interacting with my instructors.
Subsequently, the COVID-19 pandemic has proved to be a constructive disruptor. While it has led to the partial halt of many economic activities, it has provided an opportunity for restructuring the present conventional, classroom-based educational system. Regarding my professional life, the quick transitions to online mode assisted systems in maintaining the continuity of optometry education programs have been essential.
Nevertheless, the system cannot meet my professional requirements in the field entirely. A career in optometry demands substantial input from the instructors’ and students’ collaborations. Home-based learning does not provide one with the opportunity to work in teams or even engage directly with the instructors. In this case, the COVID-19 crisis has made it difficult for me to accomplish my professional objectives.
When it comes to my personal life, the COVID-19 epidemic has not spared me as it has changed many things. Back in April, when the virus was spreading quickly across the world, governments put restrictive measures to curb its impact. Before the pandemic, I used to spend my leisure time with my friends by trying different types of restaurants and foods. Regrettably, these moments were reduced to a minimum when the crisis and lockdown started. In this case, I was restricted from taking all my meals at home and conversing with my friends through online platforms. Moreover, the pandemic impacted my personal life by making me start exercising at home and observing simple and healthy tips, such as using the staircase instead of the elevator. Due to the extra time that I have had for staying at home, I have adopted a healthy behavior, like walking for small distances instead of using the car. Being a student in the healthcare profession, I have also used some of my precious moments to assist the members of society who have been severely hit by the COVID-19 pandemic, such as those with underlying health conditions, like diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart problems.
Although the COVID-19 crisis has disrupted people’s lives, I have developed strategies to respond to the changes. First, I have developed a unique schedule to improve my body weight and control other severe conditions, such as high blood pressure. I understand that sedentary lifestyles have played a significant role in increasing the cases of obesity and heart problems in our society. In this case, exercising at home is one of the ways that I have adopted to respond to the changes brought by the crisis. I have improved my technology usage by accessing much of the vital information that I can learn from to bolster both my professional and personal lives.
